Twice Nice Thrift store in Cottonwood officially closed as of Oct. 31

Executive Director: ‘We are beyond grateful for the dedication of the staff and volunteers’

COTTONWOOD, ARIZ. — Twice Nice Thriftique in Cottonwood officially closed its doors Oct. 31 after the store continued to decline financially over the past several years and was no longer sustainable for local nonprofit Verde Valley Sanctuary to keep it operating.

“It is a truly bittersweet sunset on the closing of the Cottonwood store, knowing that it has been a part of Verde Valley Sanctuary’s history for so long, and also knowing that the savings of closing the store will help us serve more survivors,” VVS Executive Director Jessye Johnson said.

“We are beyond grateful for the dedication of the staff and volunteers for all of the years of service to the mission,” she added.

In May, the VVS Board of Directors voted unanimously to close and sell the Cottonwood store property at 297 S. Main St. due to significant annual deficits, including a $52,418 operating loss during fiscal year 2022-23, according to financial reports. Recently, financial audits revealed that the store operated at a $72,966 loss in fiscal year 2023-24.

“The Sanctuary can only exist because of numerous dedicated and tireless volunteers who selflessly provide thousands of hours of labor in our thrift stores to support the organization’s mission,” VVS Board of Directors Chair David Hanke said. “We are forever thankful to each and everyone who dedicates their time and energy to assist us in providing much-needed services to our clients. Because in the end, it is all about providing those services to clients and their families in need.”

The Twice Nice store and property in Cottonwood is listed at $1.3 million, with the proceeds earmarked for further development of VVS’ new campus at 221 S. Main St, which includes expanded services through the agency’s community-based advocacy department and plans for a family advocacy center.

Residents looking to support the agency with donations of gently used clothing, shoes, furniture, jewelry, books and household items can drop them off at the other Twice Nice Thriftique locations in Sedona at 1225 W. State Route 89A, or in Camp Verde at 527 S. Main St.

Limited donations can be taken at VVS’ main campus on 221 S. Main St.

Twice Nice in Cottonwood will be open on a limited bases during the week of Nov. 12-16 for those interested in purchasing fixtures, shelving, other items that were not liquidated to the other Twice Nice locations in Sedona and Camp Verde.
