In 1993 a group of women who were concerned about domestic violence in our community met and formed Women Helping Women. Initially they began taking crisis calls in their homes and transporting victims of abuse to shelters in Flagstaff, Prescott, and Phoenix, as well as to other safe havens. This grassroots effort involved a strong commitment to effecting change locally. Many wonderful volunteers devoted countless hours to the process. This group eventually incorporated as Verde Valley Sanctuary, Inc. a non-profit organization.
Through generous donations, the agency leased a modular home that slept six, providing the first shelter beds in the Verde Valley. With sustained strategic development, the agency has expanded and can now accommodate about 28 people.
Programs have been developed and services have been added in direct response to community need. Beginning with the initial volunteer the Verde Valley Sanctuary has grown into a professional multi-service agency reaching many segments of our community. In fulfillment of its mission, Verde Valley Sanctuary now offers: shelter; a crisis hot line; safety planning; transitional housing; legal advocacy; youth outreach; and community education. Funding comes from a mix of public, foundation, and private donation money. Private contributing are increasingly important to our existence.
